Ways to Optimize Your Work From Home Dynamic

By Mackenzie Grannan

Working from home can be both a blessing and a curse. You’ll enjoy the freedom to work in a way that is comfortable to you, but it is extremely easy to develop bad habits or fall into a slump. Let’s dive into a few ways you can keep your remote work days fresh and productive!

Lighting is Everything

If you are like me, then the lighting of a room can have a huge impact on your energy level. Make your office shine by opening up the windows and letting the sunlight peek through. If your overhead light fixtures seem a little lackluster, change out any blown or dull light bulbs. Consider bringing in some new floor or desk lamps to brighten the space more. You deserve all the spotlight!

Dress for Success

Fighting the urge to stay in your pajamas all day may be one of the hardest things about not leaving the house to work. For some, staying in snuggly pjs is a temptation to crawl back in bed and avoid any responsibilities. When you wake in the morning, take the time to get completely ready, as you would for an office job. This will subconsciously get you in the mindset to have a successful and productive work day. Not to mention, you will look good doing it!

Nourish and Flourish

While you are plugging away at work tasks, be mindful of your eating and drinking habits. It is super easy to get lost in a list of to-dos, and skip a meal or not stay hydrated. Keep yourself energized and feeling great by setting little reminders to drink plenty of water, and plan out some healthy snacks to munch on while you work. You would take a break for lunch if you were in an office setting, so why not do the same when you work from home? Plan to meet a friend for lunch or prepare a tasty sandwich, fresh salad, and iced beverage to enjoy on your patio.

Eliminate the Noise

Staying focused can be another daunting obstacle to working remotely, especially without coworkers or a manager standing over you. Limit distractions by putting your phone in work mode to prevent non-emergency notifications from coming through. Be selective about the music and podcasts that you listen to, to keep from getting  carried away with an impromptu karaoke concert! Designate breaks to check your messages throughout the day, so there is a controlled time frame for outside distractions.
