Sweetest Words to Set the Tone for Valentine’s Day

Written By: Gaye Swan

Oh, Valentine’s Day! The day when true lovers exchange tokens of affection – or the day when commercialism rears its ugly head. Your point of view may depend on your mood, or your relationship status. Love it or hate it, however, Valentine’s Day is a huge revenue-spinner in the U.S. and smart marketers know how to use it to their advantage. For a copywriter, the day provides plenty of sweet ways to add a little fun to your content.

Holidays in general provide great opportunities to incorporate seasonal phrases. Valentine’s Day offers easily recognizable words and imagery for creating engaging copy. As always, though, be judicious! Going overboard with anything heart-themed becomes off-putting. A charming headline for your blog or Cupid-approved subject line for your email marketing, followed with a few on-trend phrases, is enough. You can work with a designer to incorporate hearts, roses, and the appropriate colors of pink and red to carry out your theme.

Sweeten your Blogs and Newsletters

When creating email marketing campaigns, start with an irresistible subject line. For a blog, get your readers in the mood with a catchy headline. If you are asking your audience to purchase something, a bland “Valentine’s Day Promotion” will not cut it. Stand out with creativity!

  • Offer 14% off for February 14

  • Use the promo code “LOVE” or “LOVE” combined with your business name

  • Show off a fun side with seasonal wording (more on that below)

  • Add gift ideas, recipes for a meal for two, dessert recipes, and table decor suggestions to your newsletter

  • Add some Valentine’s Day trivia to your blog – give a few lighthearted and little-known facts about the day to spice up your content.

  • Don’t forget: not everyone is in a relationship. Work a blog around Galentine’s Day or offer tips on how to treat yourself to your newsletter.

Lovely Words to Liven up Your Content

Use these Valentine’s Day-themed phrases to make your content pop:

  • From us to you – 14% off today

  • Our deals are for today – but our love lasts forever

  • Better than roses! 14% off

  • Nothing says “I love you” like…

  • Fall in love with…

  • Feel the love with…

  • In the mood to fall in love?

  • Treat Yourself!

  • Give the gift of…

  • Sweets to the Sweet!

  • It’s a sweetheart of a deal

  • Crush on our products

  • You’ll fall head over heels for…

Puns can be fun, but make sure they are on-brand for you. For example, I saw a great ad campaign for a bakery, using clever puns such as “I love you cherry much” and “You are the apple of my pie.” A tea company promotes its savory “Queen of Tarts” blend very effectively in February. The State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources created a cute ad campaign featuring slogans such as “I’ll never leaf you, Valentine” superimposed over a maple leaf drawing and “Is that love in the air that I smelt, Valentine?” over an image of a smelt fish.

Finally, here are a few all-purpose words to inspire the Valentine’s Day spirit:

Charm, amor, swoon, celebrate, roses, chocolate, candy, heartbeat, connect, moonstruck, romance, and forever.

Anything heart related: heartthrob, heartwarming, heart-shaped, key to your heart, and heartfelt.

And anything to do with love: lovable, love letters, lovebirds, and puppy love.

Not all ideas work for all brands, but we hope these ideas will unlock the heart of your own Valentine’s Day creativity!
