Podcast Recording Tips

By: Cecilia Fay

You have selected your podcast topic, and platform, invited your guests, and know how to save money doing it all. You have almost crossed the podcast finish line, but before you dive headfirst into recording, you need to take some important steps to ensure your podcast slays. Here are three  tips for  smooth sailing on recording day.

Do some prep work

Before you even get into the podcast location, make sure you have prepared for the recording. You need to have your questions and speaking notes ready to go. I recommend creating a google doc or word document with everything you need. You also need to have recording software like audacity or audition downloaded to your device. Prepare your area by setting up

Make sure your setting is acoustically ready.

Locate a quiet, isolated space for recording. Set it up for maximum success by  shutting windows, turning off unnecessary appliances, and informing other people who may be around that recording time is quiet time. Keep your space free of disturbances by hanging materials like blankets or curtains around the recording area to absorb unwanted echoes and reflections.

Set up your microphones.

Place your microphone for optimal sound quality. Positioning  your microphone about 4-8 inches from your mouth gives you the best sounding audio. You and/or your producer can wear headphones when recording to ensure consistent sound levels and catch any unexpected noises. Setting up mics also comes with having a decent seating arrangement for not only yourself but your guest. Make sure you are close enough to the mic but are also comfortable. Having guests across from you instead of next to you will minimize head turning and make the audio sound better.

Be ready to speak almost perfectly.

Test your microphone and warm up your voice! You can do simple voice exercises or practice what you will say. Ask a friend or colleague to listen as you prepare and offer suggestions on ways to keep your script natural. Stay hydrated throughout the recording to maintain a smooth, clear voice. Keep water close at hand to avoid cottonmouth and distracting mouth clicks.

With these three  tips – a sound-treated environment, dialed-in mics, and a prepped voice – you have a rock-solid plan for a flawless recording. Now take a deep breath, hit record with confidence, and happy podcasting!
