Marketing Trends to Anticipate in 2023

Written by: The Campfire Collective Team

January always seems to be the month of plans. New Year’s resolutions are often a jumping off point for sometimes extravagant plans for the year ahead. Businesses start fresh with new campaigns for the first quarter of the year. Plans include some anticipation: How much time will we need to accomplish this goal? What kind of equipment will we need for our newest exercise routine? The team at Campfire Collective has looked at reports from 2022, as well as our own yearly analytics, and have put together a few marketing trends we believe we will see take off in 2023:

R.I.P. Twitter

Head Trailblazer Shannon laments the future of her favorite platform: “While I anticipate this happening much slower than others, I do see my beloved Twitter falling to the wayside. What has been my favorite social media platform for years has now been bought by an egocentric billionaire who can't get out of his own way. Because of this, what we all loved about Twitter - the community, breaking news, funny jokes, hot takes - is disappearing. I see people moving off Twitter and jumping onto another social media platform to fill that void. Whether it's Mastodon, a Tumblr revival, or something completely new, society will find a place for Woj to break sports news and Dionne Warwick to thrive again.” Raise your hand if you want a Tumblr revival!

New King of the Platform Mountain

Kindler Sarah weighed in on the global game of capture-the-flag for supreme platform: “With a very uncertain future for Twitter, there are already a few new platforms vying for a spot at the top. Mastodon? Hive? Will an older platform like Tumblr or Myspace experience a resurgence among zoomers who can't get enough of everything ‘vintage Y2K’? However it shakes out, it feels like 2023 will be a social media free-for-all. Who wants popcorn?”

Chaos Content

Team Wayfinder Ariana foresees the strategy behind the chaos in her 2023 prediction. “From the HootSuite 2022 trends report/The Feed: ‘using chaos, the weird to be innovative when being heard across platforms.’ Hyperbole has always been a tool of social media in my personal opinion - we’ve been waiting for a sarcasm font for a decade. We saw it in the rise of the Ice Bucket Challenge, now we are seeing even more extreme social stunts to garner attention. It definitely is a way to stand out and grab attention and I don’t think we have hit peak chaos yet. If videos rose to the top of the feed in 2022, 2023 will move beyond dance challenges and video content will move into tele-novella level drama to maintain focus in the next year. “

All Technicalities Aside

Kindler Cecilia noted, “TikTok is much more technical and makes posting content difficult. Because of the easier technical aspect on Instagram Reels, I believe users will leave TikTok if they haven’t already and create most of their video content through reels.” To piggyback off our previous blog post about 2022 Trends, Cecilia also points out that TikTok may see a decline in use because of the barrier of how technical the app’s processes are to use. Content creators don’t have the time to expertly curate a unique application process for every single platform they use. Shared usability and ease of use will see apps that require too much technical expertise fall to the wayside for platforms that make the creators’ experience easier.

#Adios - Bye-Bye Hashtags

Content Kindler Elizabeth dropped a bomb on the team in our weekly meeting, referencing this HootSuite blog about the decline in efficacy of the hashtag on Instagram. Our team collectively picked our jaws up off of the floor and are already formulating a plan to conduct our own research in hashtag use for our accounts to determine what we will do in the latter half of 2023 if the findings ring true. According to the HootSuite blog, SEO will now be the way to discover content on Instagram, something we as a team are already prioritizing in regards to our website, and is a pivot point we should be able to easily traverse in the new year.

Some trends that we anticipate for 2023 won’t take us by surprise as much as Elizabeth’s news about the hashtag’s numbered days. Our team is already working on ways to incorporate some of these trends as they loom on the horizon. What other trends could be waiting in the latter half of 2023? Only time will tell.
