Building and Maintaining Relationships Part 3: Long-Term Success with Media and Community

By Kate Lollar

In the first two parts of our series, we covered the fundamentals of outreach and how to stay top-of-mind with your contacts without being over the top. Now, let's explore the final piece of the puzzle: creating long-term success through strong partnerships with both media and community organizations. Creating a ripple effect of mutual benefits isn’t just a good PR strategy, it’s also a way to make your work more fulfilling and fun. Here are five strategies to help you foster and maintain long-term relationships .

1. Invest in Genuine, Two-Way Partnerships

Whether you’re working with media outlets or community organizations, the relationship should be about more than just fulfilling your immediate needs. Take the time to understand your potential partner’s goals, challenges, and values. Then, look for ways to align your client’s work with those priorities, such as promoting causes that matter to both parties, supporting community events, or collaborating on meaningful projects. When both sides win, partnerships flourish. One noteworthy example from our recent client work is the Welcome to Memphis hospitality jobs fair we hosted at the Overton Park Shell before a free concert. Working within a sponsorship, we leveraged our relationship with the Shell to create an event that uplifted WTM’s mission of supporting the hospitality industry and the Shell’s mission of bringing people together for fabulous music!

2. Become a Reliable Resource

Consistency is crucial in building long-term relationships. Make it a priority to position yourself and your client as go-to resources for your media and community partners. Offer timely and credible information, be available for last-minute interview requests, and keep partners posted on newsworthy info. Over time, these consistent actions build a foundation of trust, ensuring that journalists, influencers, and community partners know they can count on you for accurate and useful information whenever they need it.

3. Collaborate on Storytelling

Long-term media partnerships are often the result of creative collaboration. Instead of simply pitching stories, think about how you can collaborate with media outlets to co-create content. Consider joint projects such as co-hosting events, running a content series, or developing a recurring feature that aligns with both your client's messaging and the media outlet’s audience interests. By working together on storytelling, you deepen the relationship and increase the likelihood of ongoing coverage that benefits both parties. Campfire Collective’s partnership with I Love Memphis to highlight local nonprofits each month through our Carrying the Torch series is one example of collaborative storytelling that we love.

4. Engage and Contribute to the Community

Your relationship with the community is just as important as your media partnerships. Take an active role in local events, charitable efforts, or community-driven initiatives. By aligning yourself with causes that resonate with the public, you foster goodwill and trust, and you build new opportunities for your clients. Additionally, engaging authentically with the community creates opportunities for organic media coverage. At Campfire Collective, we are intentionally active in our community in many ways. Our podcast Just Bluffin’ is a perfect  example of how we use our platform to uplift people in the community who are making a difference.

5. Continuously Evolve and Adapt

The media landscape and community needs are always changing. To maintain long-term success, it’s essential to be adaptable. Regularly evaluate your relationships and assess how you can provide new value. Adjust the types of stories you pitch to reflect emerging trends and continue to identify new opportunities for your client to engage with the community in meaningful ways.

Building and maintaining long-term relationships with media and community partners requires time, effort, and a genuine commitment to collaboration and mutual benefit. By investing in these relationships, becoming a reliable resource, collaborating on storytelling, engaging with the community, and staying adaptable, you’ll create a foundation for sustained success.  Strong partnerships will not only help your clients today but will also open doors for future opportunities and growth.
